When I began to date, a good number of guys I went out with had an opinion of how I should look, what I should wear, how I needed to lose weight, tone my leg muscles, etc. The list of areas I could improve was long, hurtful, and too exhausting to attain. Bobbing up and down in my own sea of unworthiness, I was allowing others’ points of view toward me to pound against the S.S. Shameful that I was already hopelessly trying to stand upright on. This life’s excursion rivaled Gilligan's Island S.S. Minnow’s, where a hope for a three-hour sightseeing tour went horribly wrong.
Looking for love and acceptance in others’ opinions will land you shipwrecked on a desert island of emotional insecurities, unstable as sinking sand. Until we find our true north—our inherent worth in Jesus Christ—we cannot live in our true, God-given identity. He is an anchor for our tossed soul, securing our self-worth in Christ alone, far removed from every whim of public opinion. Our need for approval is met in Christ alone. And the Lord said to me one day, "If we play to an audience of one, we will always have a sold-out crowd." He is sold out to you.
“We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat which sits in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold” (Hebrews 6:19, TPT).
